Revealed: the gender pay gap for every industry in the UK

We all know the gender pay gap exists.

It is a frustrating – and, frankly, baffling – fact of life that here in the UK women get paid significantly less than men.

The latest estimation from the Office of National Statistics is that we get paid a whopping 18.1% less on average. And while this may be the lowest the gap has been since records began, a report released by the Women and Equalities Select Committee earlier this year showed that the situation has barely improved over the last four years.

And if you’re a glutton for punishment, you can now pinpoint exactly how much more your male colleagues are earning than you, per hour, using a new tool launched today by the Minister for Women and Equalities, Justine Greening.

Simply open the webpage, which you can find here, and select your industry to see the average gap in salary.

The tool was launched alongside details of how employers will be required to report both their gender pay gaps and gender bonus gaps from next April.

The new law will see almost 8,000 employers required to publish details on the pay gap among approximately 11 million employees, in the hope that highlighting the inequalities in salaries will enable action to be taken.

“If we are to help women to reach their potential and eliminate the gender pay gap, we need to shine a light on our workplaces to see where there is more to do to,” Greening said in a statement released today.

“This tool will empower both men and women to challenge this issue in their profession and help people to make more informed decisions about their career.”

The tool demonstrates that construction and building trades, as well as financial managers and directors, have the highest gender pay gaps in the UK.
