Among the masses of teens who turned out to stage demonstrations, it was the girls who were particularly vocal, with social media users taking to Twitter to share powerful snaps of young women being marched away by heavily armed riot police.

Reports show that hundreds of the protestors were arrested, with over 700 people detained in Moscow and 300 more in St. Petersburg, while schools threatened to expel any students who showed up to protest.

But that clearly wasn’t enough to deter the youth of Russia.

“I came here because we have no democracy, our Parliament is not real, our politicians are not real and our mass media is not real,” said one 18-year-old, when asked why she had decided to join the movement.
