There have been rumours of a third Sex and the City film for a really long time now, not least because star Sarah Jessica Parker has been championing the cause for years.

But we have news for anyone convinced that another big-screen instalment of Carrie, Sam, Charlotte and Miranda is just what Hollywood needs: it’s time to put your dreams of to bed once and for all, because SJP says it is Definitely. Not. Happening.

Oh, they got as far as a script and everything – something described as “beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful” – but speaking to Extra, Parker says she, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon will not be reprising their roles.

We repeat: there will be no SATC 3.

“It’s over… we’re not doing it,” she said while attending the New York City Ballet Gala. “I’m disappointed. We had this beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful, very relatable script and story.”

She went on to explain that she wasn’t the only one upset about it: “It’s not just disappointing that we don’t get to tell the story and have that experience, but more so for that audience that has been so vocal in wanting another movie.”

Whatever your thoughts on the previous film outings, released in 2008 and 2010 and based on the much-loved TV series, a third would have inevitably been a commercial success.

Just last year, Parker was still saying she was “down” for a third film, and revealed those involved were in “discussion”.

But, with a Carrie Bradshaw-like obliviousness to the feelings of others, the project is over and fans must cry themselves to sleep with the boxset.

There’s no word as yet on the reason behind the breakdown in talks, although some media outlets cite unnamed sources claiming the film had got as far as being scheduled to begin shooting in the next few days – but that Cattrall said she would only sign up if the studio, Warner Bros, promised to back her other film projects.
