This might come as a surprise, but I am not an indecisive person. Of course, like everyone, sometimes I really don’t mind. Whether I walked along the river or around the park, for example, is something I really, really didn’t have an opinion on. But everything else in that list? I was absolutely certain of what I’d prefer. Dinner? Daal. Blonde? Cool-toned. Train? 19.07. Cinema? Past Lives. Article? Condiments, every time.

I’d knew what I wanted and, if I was making those decisions alone, just for me, without anyone along for the ride, I’d have made them in approximately five seconds. But as soon as someone else was involved – whether a friend, partner, boss or even my hairdresser – I had a block. I’d pause, assume a face that indicated careful thought and then breezily reply: “Ooh, I really don’t mind! What do YOU think?” Meanwhile, my inner control freak was screaming.
