With just a matter of weeks to go until it’s release, here’s everything we know so far about Secret Obsessions – Netflix’s creepy new rom-com antidote.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Always Be My Maybe, Someone Great – if you’ve been on Netflix recently, you’d be forgiven for thinking the streaming giant is solely focused on taking over the romantic comedy genre, one quirky coming-of-age story at a time.
The latest wave of originals to come from the streaming giant includes touching plot lines featuring a refreshingly diverse set of characters, and newly updated themes such as self-love, shared passions and the importance of friendship above all else.
But, by the looks of things, Netflix’s latest addition puts a much darker spin on a romantic relationship.
Netflix has just released the first full-length trailer for Secret Obsession, the upcoming original film set to be available on the streaming platform from 18 July – in a little over a week’s time.
It features a newlywed woman who wakes up from what appears to have been a violent car accident, only to realise she’s unable to remember anything from her past. What happens next looks pretty dark…
Here’s everything we know so far about Secret Obsession.
What is the plot of Secret Obsession?
In Secret Obsession, the newlywed Jennifer wakes up in hospital after what looks like a violent car accident, unable to remember anything about her life. She has major injuries and has to use a wheelchair.
Her husband Russell is there by her bedside when she wakes up, and explains what happened before taking her home for some R&R. He seems nice at first, but alarm bells start to ring when, in the trailer, he gleefully tells Jennifer that the nearest neighbours to their haunted mansion-like house are over a mile away. Gulp.
As seen in the newly-released trailer this man isn’t really Jennifer’s husband at all, but someone who’s apparently taken his ‘secret obsession’ with her to the extreme.
We’re still in the dark about what happens next, but it looks set to get seriously creepy.
Who is starring in Secret Obsession?
Former Suite Life of Zach and Cody star Brenda Song plays Jennifer and Mike Vogel, arguably best known for his role in The Help, takes the part of her husband-not-husband Russell (if that even is his real name). Their co-stars include Dennis Haysbert as Detective Page – the officer assigned to Jennifer’s case.
Why does the trailer give away the plot twist?
Apparently that’s the point, according to Song.
“The audience actually finds out the twist before my character does,” she told Refinery29. “I think the thrill of the movie is trying to help Jennifer catch up.”
Just as 2018’s You starring Penn Badgley and Ambyr Childers had viewers willing the hapless Beck to discover the truth about her boyfriend-come-stalker Joe Goldberg, it looks like Secret Obsession will have us all screaming at our screens.
Is there a trailer for Secret Obsession?
Yes – Netflix has just released their first full-length trailer.
It opens with Jennifer waking up in the hospital bed, and goes on to give us a snapshot of events as Russell’s web of lies begins to unravel. This is definitely not one to watch alone…
