Nothing brings joy to our hearts quite like the announcement of a new set of emojis, particularly when said announcement involves a whopping 51 new images.
As ever, the list includes emojis we didn’t even know we needed until now: including a mermaid, a piece of broccoli and – our favourite – not one but two dinosaurs (prepare to welcome a mini T-Rex and sauropod to your phone, Jurassic fans).
Even better, with the new slew of expressive icons set to launch in mid-2017, there is plenty of time to plan how you’re going to squeeze the more unusual icons (such as a naked lady in a steam room and a flying saucer) into everyday conversations.
The new set of emojis, approved by The Unicode Consortium, also make a move towards inclusivity with the inclusion of a hijab emoji.
The image is rumoured to have been inspired by the design of 15-year-old Saudi girl Rayouf Alhumedhi, who went viral last month when she took to Reddit to implore Apple to launch an emoji featuring a woman wearing a hijab.
Other welcome additions to the emoji family include a breastfeeding woman and new animals, including a hedgehog, giraffe and zebra.
However, those wanting to see a redheaded emoji will have to wait a little longer, with no ginger emojis on the approved list released by Unicode.
