They’re back!

After years of rumours and is-it-isn’t-it pondering about whether an Absolutely Fabulous film was in the works, Joanna Lumley confirmed earlier this year that she was working on a script for Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie.

This week, shooting for the film commenced and BBC Films have released the first official picture of Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders on set.

The film will reunite the badly-behaved champagne-guzzling, chain-smoking duo, who appeared in the iconic nineties BBC TV show for almost two decades, from 1994 to 2012.

Saunders will return to play the self-involved, filthy rich fashion victim, Edina Monsoon and Lumley will return to her role as Patsy Stone, the high-powered but work-shy fashion director, who has only been spotted eating twice since 1973.

In the photograph, Eddy and Patsy appear on a yacht, dressed to the nines and sipping on their favourite tipple, ‘Bolly.’

Other original cast members to appear in the film include Eddy’s ‘boring’ daughter, Saffy (Julia Sawalha), her ditzy assistant, Bubble (Jane Horrocks) and over-bearing mother (June Whitfield).

The film will be shooting in the UK and the South of France over the coming seven weeks and the story will begin in London with Patsy and Eddy up to their usual ways, until they are blamed for a “major incident at an uber fashionable launch party”, and the pair flee to the French Riviera, without any money.

“I am thrilled and excited to finally start filming,” says Saunders. “We are all on the Sanatogen and hoping for the best.”

With direction from Mandie Fletcher (Blackadder, Absolutely Fabulous) and a script by Saunders, we know we will be in for a treat, reliving the glory days of nineties television.

“Ab Fab on the big screen is a treat we've been hotly anticipating at BBC Films and we're very proud to join Jennifer and her terrific team for this delicious reunion,” says Christine Langan, head of BBC Films.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, is due in cinemas in 2016.
