We’ve already begun to fully embrace winter. Not only have we made red wine hot chocolate and sampled Pret’s new Christmas sandwiches, we’ve also stocked up on November’s hottest new reads and bought all of the woolly jumpers.

And now, it looks likely that we’ll be able to cross the ultimate winter moment off our checklist, with forecasters predicting that snow will arrive in the UK from as early as this afternoon.

Most of central England woke up to frost this morning after temperatures fell to minus five degrees last night, and snow and sleet are scheduled to follow in its wake.

Forecasters have predicted a snowfall of up to 15cm deep, with a weather warning in place for Scotland and northern England from midday today. The snow is set to continue falling until tomorrow morning.

Speaking to The Independent, Met Office forecaster Emma Sillitoe said, “We have had a few wintry showers but this is the first event where more people are going to be affected.”

“There is a frontal system moving in from the west meeting the quite cold weather we have been having over the last few days,” she added.
