Tea in a spray can is now a thing, as if 2016 hasn’t been bleak enough

2016, it’s fair to say, has borne several signs of an impending apocalypse. The deaths of David Bowie, Prince, and Alan Rickman. Brexit. Donald Trump. The end of the Great British Bake Off as we know it. And now, perhaps the biggest harbinger of doom of all: sprayable tea.

That’s right, sprayable tea. New product No More Tea Bags is an aerosol spray can filled with a “liquid tea concentrate” (mm, delicious), which you then spray into a cup of hot water. At the end of this short, bleakly sterile process you are – according to the company behind the product, at least – left with a perfectly brewed cuppa.

Tea in a can: the end is nigh.

“It was really about just trying to make a better cup of tea,” Guy Woodall, the man behind Yum Cha Drinks, told Reuters UK. “Of course there’s an element of convenience with this and not having a soggy tea bag to get rid of at the end of it.”

Discounting the fact that the ritual of tea-making is part of what makes it so enjoyable, Woodall’s comments invites the question: what kind of person is so heinously busy that waiting for a teabag to steep counts as a real inconvenience?

Exactly the kind of person, we think, who needs to take a moment and relax with a cup of tea. A proper one, that is.
