Based on a hit Danish show, 200 applicants will be whittled down to six people willing to say "I do" to a stranger in front of family and friends.

Channel 4 said: "For over 20 years leading psychologists have been researching the theory that human behaviour - such as acting lovingly towards another person - can actually spark the genuine emotional response in both parties… love? Is it really possible to ‘choose’ to fall in love?"

Chief creative officer Jay Hunt described the experimental show as the broadcaster "taking on Britain’s reputation as the divorce capital of Europe."
