Susanna Reid has no time for Pier Morgan’s shaming of Love Island fans

News presenter Susanna Reid has, for a very long time, done her best to grin and bear it (‘it’, of course, referring to Piers Morgan) on Good Morning Britain.

However, over the past few months, the talented journalist’s superhuman fortitude has faltered on more than one occasion.

We’ve seen her defend older mums from his ageist twaddle, shut down his body-shaming, annihilate his laughable sexist arguments, and, most recently, publicly call him out on all of his vitriolic bulls*** in an unexpected (and wonderful) live TV rant.

Now it seems the floodgates are well and truly open – and, while Reid may still have to, y’know, sit next to her co-host, she’s made it her mission to openly mock him and poke holes in his character whenever possible.

Take, for instance, their recent chat about ITV2’s Love Island.

This year’s series of Love Island has been something of a humdinger: we’ve cheered on self-proclaimed feminist Camilla as she gave Jonny a lesson in male privilege, seen our misconceptions about anxiety and insecurity challenged and debated what it really means to break up with ‘the nice guy’.

And yet, despite the thought-provoking TV content – unexpected as it may be on a reality show not known for its feminist credentials – Morgan decided to mock the show and our fascination with it during a recent episode of GMB.

“Did Dumbo get back with Limbo?” he asked scathingly, after Reid revealed that she was a fan of the ITV2 dating show.

Of course, hell hath no fury like a woman whose favourite TV show has just been scorned.

Unwilling to take Morgan’s comments lying down, Reid smiled brightly before informing him that he reminded her of one of the show’s contestants.

Morgan, being the egotistical whatsit that he is, was of course intrigued by this idea – and nodded at Reid to continue. Which she did with aplomb.

“There is a character called Theo who is the biggest wind-up artist,” Reid informed her co-host.

“He is such a stirrer and he just takes great pleasure in making everyone else feel uncomfortable.”

Grinning at the expression on Morgan’s face, Reid added: “I think you'd really feel like there was a kindred spirit.”

Seems a little harsh on Theo, if you ask us.

Of course, Morgan can scoff all he likes at Love Island, but he’s (surprise surprise) incorrect in his assumption that TV shows like this are the refuge of the gormless.

In fact, a scientific study has proven the complete opposite: it's the smartest people who love the “dumbest” movies and TV shows.

“The majority of trash film [and TV] fans appear to be well-educated cultural ‘omnivores’,” experts explained, “and they conceive of their preference for trash films in terms of an ironic viewing stance.”

While we have no shame in admitting our trash TV habits aren’t always ironic, we’ll take it as one in the eye for Morgan any day.
