When we were young, our greatest responsibility in life was, essentially, trying not to kill our Tamagotchis.
Showing it all the care and reverence we would a baby animal, we took care of its every (technological) whim: playing, feeding and sleeping – all in the hope it would live forever. And we even managed to get out parents on board, pleading with them to nurture our Tamagotchi when we were off in the land of nod.
But, as time went on, we fell out of love with our virtual pets. They disappeared into drawers, gathered dust in attics and got flogged at car boot sales. it’s only now, all these years later, that we realise how much fun they were – and scolded ourselves for being so careless with them.
So imagine our excitement when we learned that they’re back!
No, this is not a drill: the humble Tamagotchi is returning to stores, and our inner millennial child is screaming out for one.
Featuring the same small screen and three buttons as the original first released in Japan in 1997, the egg-shaped device is about to experience something of a renaissance, as Bandai has revealed it’s releasing a mini version of the original to mark its twentieth anniversary.
And, better still, it will be available in six different designs – from orange and blue to two-tone colours.
“Awakening and evoking nostalgic feelings from the mid-to-late '90s, this smaller Tamagotchi device features the familiar egg shape, pixelated LCD charm, and, of course, the recurrent need for tender-loving-care that endeared fans in 1997 when it was first released,” said Bandai, according to the Independent.
“To pay homage to fans, the mini Tamagotchi will also feature the iconic packaging design of the original Tamagotchi device. Now, both original fans and new fans can obsess over caring for their Tamagotchi character, and as they do the character will uniquely grow and develop.”
Well, we’re certainly hoping for one of the tiny virtual creatures to appear in our Christmas stocking this December.
