The two leads on either side of the screen are sparring book shop opponents: Meg Ryan is the charming independent store owner Kathleen Kelly, and Tom Hanks is the capitalist bully, Joe Fox, coming to put her out of business. Naturally, they hate each other, but the line between love and hate is a fine one and you are compelled to make them cross it.
