For most of us, our first drink of the day is a hot cup of tea or coffee. But it seems there's a far healthier and cheaper way to set yourself up in the morning for a busy day at work.

Drinking a glass of water.

From Arianna Huffington to president of Cinnabon, Kat Cole, to chief of Birchbox Man, Brad Lande, some of the world's leading executives kick start their morning with a simple glass of water, Business Insider reports.

While Huffington prefers to add a dash of lemon to a warm cup of H2O, Cole drinks exactly 24 ounces (682ml) when she wakes up at 5am.

Gwyneth Paltrow is also said to drink water with lemon first thing and Alessandra Steinherr, beauty director at Glamour UK, will add one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to her water glass after she's worked out.

Woman running productive

“One of the biggest indicators of lethargy or low energy is that you are dehydrated,” Rania Batayneh, a nutritionist and author, tells Business Insider. “Because water aids in both body regulation and brain function, it is also closely related to balancing out our moods.”

Batayneh claims that six to eight hours of recommended nightly sleep is a long period to go without any water consumption, especially because 73% of the human brain is made of water.

Drinking a glass or two of water as soon as you wake up is a good way to quickly re-hydrate yourself and maintain optimal brain activity. The result is an increased level of alertness, energy and productivity.

If you ever need a reason to cut back on your coffee purchases and up your water intake, this is it.
