The Oscar-winning actress is about to take on one of pop culture’s most iconic roles.
There is an enduring fascination with all things related to the family Addams.
Three movies, one Halloween special and two television series (one animated, one live action) have been made about pop culture’s most iconic gothic household, all of which were based on the original cartoons by illustrator Charles Addams.
And this year, a brand new reboot will debut in cinemas with Charlize Theron in the starring role as Addams family matriarch Morticia.
In the original movie series from the early Nineties Morticia was played with a deliciously wicked streak by Anjelica Huston. Her feisty, kinky, fiercely feminist Morticia set the tone for the entire film series, which played on ideas of BDSM-positivity, open-mindedness and acceptance. The rest of the cast, which included Raul Julian as Gomez, Christina Ricci as Wednesday and Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester, followed in her brilliant wake.
So the news that a brand new The Addams Family reboot will be coming to cinemas this year, and that it will star none other than Theron in the lead role, is cause for celebration here in the Stylist.co.uk offices.
This is everything we know about the movie thus far:
Who is in the cast of The Addams Family?
We already know that Charlize Theron will be starring as Morticia, but just wait till you hear about the rest of the cast.
Oscar Isaac will play her loving and devoted husband Gomez, while Chloe Grace Moretz will play their petulantly imperious daughter Wednesday. Son Pugsley will be played by Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard, Uncle Fester by comedian Nick Kroll, and the Addams family’s Grandmama by none other than the legendary Bette Midler.
Also starring in the movie are Allison Janney and Elsie Fisher as new characters Margaux and Parker Needler, a mother-daughter duo who serve as the arch nemeses for Morticia and Wednesday.
The Needlers are “consumed with a desire for absolute suburban pastel perfection,” Entertainment Weekly has said, which tells you all you need to know about them.
Is The Addams Family a cartoon?
It is. The latest reboot of the gothic franchise will be an animated movie released later this year.
The decision to go with animation rather than live action for The Addams Family was about honouring creator Charles Addams’ original vision for his characters. They began life as cartoons published in The New Yorker in 1938 after all, and now they’ll be in cartoon form again – but for the first time on the big screen.
The design of the characters closely mirrors the original artwork. Just look at Gomez in his pinstripe suit and badger eyes with Pugsley as his fair-haired mini-me and Morticia, graceful as a ballerina in a slinky black gown.
We can’t wait.
Who is the director of The Addams Family?
Animators Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, the team behind the hilarious adults-only cartoon Sausage Party, will direct.
Originally, the movie was intended to be a stop motion animation helmed by Tim Burton, but he had to exit the project. The script for the movie you’ll see in cinemas this year was written by Burton’s frequent collaborator Pamela Pettler, the screenwriter on Corpse Bride and a credited writer on Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Pettler also wrote the script for Monopoly, a film based on everyone’s favourite board game, to be directed by Ridley Scott.
What is the plot of The Addams Family?
An in-depth description of the plot of The Addams Family is yet to be announced, but we do have a brief synopsis.
Basically, it will see the Addams family going about their creepy, kooky business and preparing to host their relatives for a major celebration when they are forced into battle against a family so perfect and prissy that they go against everything the Addamses stand for. (That would be the Needlers, played by Janney and Fisher.)
Is there a trailer for The Addams Family?
