From a new Modern Pantry to the Fat Duck reopening, the UK’s best new restaurants of September

It's autumn and time to EAT. The summer and its thoughts of light salads are out of the window, and it's time to start enjoying our food. To help out, there are a plethora of new restaurants opening around the country. 

We've teamed up with restaurant site Hot Dinners, the source of all London restaurant news from the latest openings to chef gossip, to bring you insider information about the upcoming openings for each month - in London and around the country.

9 Seymour Place, London W1H 5BA
Opening date: 2 September
What’s the story? Good old ‘holiday’ tapas – chorizo in cider, albondigas, tortilla – is set to become extinct in London after the outbreak of high-quality tapas in recent years. So much so that an old favourite, Donosita, has got so much business it has expanded across the road. Lurra has the aim of sourcing all its own products rather than relying on faceless suppliers and if Donosita is anything to go by, this will pay off.

Archie’s Bar and Kitchen

Arches V & W, The Dark Arches, Granary Wharf, Leeds, LS1 4BR 
Opening date: 4 September
What’s the story? Ossett Brewery is (sort of) taking over Leeds. After the successes of Candlebar and The Hop, the brewery has invested in a third Granary Wharf location. Archie’s Bar promises eating, drinking and disco and its location in the slightly sinister sounding Dark Arches will help not hinder this with a modern interior and a finger lickin' gastropub menu.

Modern Pantry

Alphabeta Building, 14-18 Finsbury Square, EC2A 1BR
Opening date: 11 September (Soft launch until 10 September)
What’s the story? Anna Hansen’s Clerkenwell Modern Pantry is now a stalwart of the London restaurant scene, and the only surprise with its second branch is that it’s taken so long to happen. The space its in will be different, in an Art Deco building on Finsbury Square, but with a head chef who has worked with Anna since 2008, the food will be just as high quality.

The Manhattans Project

Pond Dalston, Unit G2, Stamford Works, 3 Gillett St, London N16 8JH
Launch date: 4 September
What’s the story? Pond Dalston has been wowing the East London crowds since it opened earlier this year, with its twist on Hawaiian food. Anything apart from a ham and pineapple pizza would have impressed to be fair, but now the Manhattans Project is giving it a cocktail-shaped twist. From super-strong cocktails of the same name, to hot Ribena (yes, hot Ribena) the three-month residency is the perfect antidote to the start of a cold snap.

DF Mexico

28-29 Tottenham Court Road, London W1T 1BU
Opening date: 17 September
What’s the story? Thomasina Myers transformed Mexican eating with the enormously popular Wahaca, and DF/Mexico is a loving offshoot of the chain with a more US influence. At the moment, one exists in the Old Truman Brewery in Shoreditch, but for the non-Brick Lane inclined, another branch opens this month on Tottenham Court Road

Asha’s Manchester

Peter St, Manchester M2 5QR
Opening date: 18 September
What’s the story? Legendary Bollywood star Asha Bhosle’s Birmingham restaurant is the stuff of even more legends, and is now finally expanding to Manchester. The menu spans all times and seasons, and the drinks menu means it’s the perfect place for a first date or a company party. Long anticipated, Asha herself is rumoured to be attending the opening.

Opening date: 23 September (soft launch from 17-20 September)
What’s the story? Marylebone is suddenly the hottest area to open restaurants, this might be because of a certain converted Firehouse, but who can say? Anyhow, a new Italian restaurant is opening and it looks rather splendid. Run by the veteran Bernardi brothers, the head chef is Roux Scholarship nominee Sabrina Gidda who is promising simple, modern, Italian food. See you there.

426 Coldharbour Lane, Brixton SW9 8LF
Opening date: September 25 (soft launch to September 27)
What’s the story? The Masterchef hardcore (if there is such a thing) have been waiting years for a permanent opening by Tim Anderson, the charismatic winner of the first re-vamped edition of the show back in 2011. Nanban – formally a travelling pop-up – will of course feature Tim’s signature Japanese Soul Food, and presumably huge queues.

The Good Egg

93 Stoke Newington Church Street, London, N16 0AS
Opening date: 29 September (soft launch from 25 September)
What’s the story? Yet another pop-up has bedded down for the winter, but as the name suggests, it’s a good egg, and a welcome addition to the Stoke Newington scene. With culinary roots from Tel Aviv, California and Montreal, and a feel-good sustainability edge, eggs are at the centre of most dishes but you can expect more than a typical brunch affair with the menu ranging from a short rib pastrami to bagels and cured meats.

Fat Duck

High St, Bray, West Berkshire SL6 2AQ
Re-opening date: 29 September
What’s the story? It may be a re-opening, but this wouldn’t be an in-the-know restaurant column without a mention of Heston Blumenthal’s ‘flagship’ restaurant Fat Duck which having taken a break to Melbourne is flying the Bray flag once again. Bookings are open now, but there’s a ticketing system so you might be waiting a while.
