Another cult teen movie is getting the TV treatment. Hot on the heels of news that Cruel Intentions is getting a sequel, we've learned that Heathers will be re-made for the small screen.

The Christian Slater/Winona Ryder movie has garnered cult classic status for encapsulating what it means to be an outcast at high school, making plaid happen and, incidentally, for its imagining of the original mean girls.

But if you're a loyalist of the 1988 original - fear not.

The new series won't recreate the twisted vengeful plot, or at least not to the letter, nor will it be a sequel or prequel as per the Cruel Intentions reboot.

Instead, the new series will be a total re-imagining of Heathers, riffing off the themes of the original for a totally new perspective on school life at Westerberg High. The new series will feature characters who will turn the plot on its head, with the outcasts becoming the bullies.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals: "Heather McNamara (originally played by Lisanne Falk) is a black lesbian; Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty) is a male who identifies as gender-queer whose real name is Heath; and Heather Chandler (Kim Walker) has a body like Martha Dumptruck."

It's also billed as an anthology series, so there's room it be re-worked with new themes and characters each series.

It's being made by US channel TV Land, so fingers crossed it makes it to the UK.

TV bosses, if you're listening: any plans for cameos from Slater or Ryder are very welcome.
