Predictions for next year’s most popular baby names have just been revealed by parenting website Emma’s Diary – and a certain prince has possibly been quite influential…

3,500 women due to give birth in 2018 were asked their opinions on a list of potential baby names in order to compile the list.

Harry topped the list for boy’s names – potentially influenced by Prince Harry, Harry Potter or even Harry Styles. The most popular girl’s name was Olivia – a perennial feature in popular names lists.

Both lists combined traditional names with more modern selections – George, Jack and Oliver were picked alongside Logan for boys, with Isla and Ava in the top ten girls names alongside always popular classics like Emily and Grace.

Harry Styles might have something to do with his name’s popularity

Names ending in A – Isla, Ava, Amelia, Sophia and Freya to name a few  – also dominated the girls’ list.

“We can see a real royal influence in the names selected for 2018 – interestingly, George and Charlotte were both ranked in the top 20 most popular names,” said Faye Mingo, Marketing Director at Emma’s Diary.

“Olivia and Oliver continue to remain popular amongst parents-to-be, as do traditional and biblical inspired names such as Jacob and Noah.”

Most popular names for girls were:

  1. Olivia

Earlier this year, research also found a list of baby names that were in danger of becoming extinct. BabyCentre found that names including Ian, Mildred, Edna and Gus had not been registered at all during 2017 – so if you want to give your baby a truly unique name, perhaps you can find your inspiration there.
