The idea is touted as a simple three-step process – apply online, e-sign the agreement and receive the money. Each couple is evaluated in terms of risk, using – according to the website – “online data and algorithm software technology”.

As of yet, no information about interest rates has been released, and there's no detail on whether the couple are always liable 50/50, or whether the circumstances of the divorce could affect it. One would assume that annulment would also result in the loan being called in.

The company plans to make money from advertising, but insists that “100% of the money collected from members who are later divorced is used to provide funds for future couples' dream weddings. SwanLuv keeps the dream alive.” In other keeping-the-dream-alive moves, SwanLuv says it will provide free marriage counselling for those going through a rough patch.

The website has the tagline “Everlasting marriage deserves to be rewarded” – though of course in this case, the reward is given before the marriage proves ‘deserving’ of it – and to be eligible, couples must be planning a wedding within two years of their application. Currently, it's unclear whether those living outside of the US can apply.
