See this woman's ingenious ploy for breaking up an anti-abortion protest

Anti-abortion protests outside clinics are on the rise in the UK.

This type of so-called "pro-life" protest has previously been more common in the United States but, according to recent figures, around half of abortion clinics in the UK now have regular protesters outside.

Many women report feeling "judged", "panicked" and "scared," by such protests.

Over in the States, one woman took a stand this week and staged her own spontaneous solo response to an anti-abortion protest in the city of Portland, and has been widely praised for her actions.

The protest took place outside a branch of Planned Parenthood, an American non-profit organisation that provides free reproductive health services within the U.S and elsewhere.

Mary Numair, 29, was at work in Purringtons Cat Lounge on Sunday, when she saw a woman outside the Planned Parenthood branch, carrying a sign that said "Abortion Kills Children."

Having never seen protesters at that particular branch before, Numair immediately retaliated, creating her own sign out of a discarded piece of cardboard, which read:

“Dear P.P., Thanks for helping me with my yeast infections!”

Numair then planted herself amongst the anti-abortion protesters, doing high kicks and chanting "Yeast infections!"

Explaining her actions to Slate, she says:

“They [Planned Parenthood] do so much beyond abortions. I’m very much pro-choice, but if you want to take it beyond pro-choice and pro-life, there are… all these other things that are uncomfortable to talk about and [get treated if] you don’t want to wait two weeks to see your primary doctor or you don’t have health insurance.”

Numair explained that she had previously been unable to obtain health insurance, as the result of a pre-existing condition, and that Planned Parenthood had helped her when she was suffering from chronic yeast infections.

They also provided the young woman with birth control.

“They’re also the ones who so graciously informed me, after I freaked out after losing my virginity, that I had a latex allergy and there was no reason to panic,” she says.

Numair's spontaneous display didn't go down well with everyone - one passer-by even called her a "whore" - but she continued nonetheless.

Most other responses were positive, with people honking their cars in support, or giving her thumbs-up in passing.

After only half an hour, the anti-abortion representatives abandoned their protest.

Numair took to Twitter to share her glee that her impulsive behaviour had been so successful, saying:

“Hey, I just single handedly broke up a planned parenthood protest by chanting the words “yeast infections.” (sic)

Numair has says that she hopes to continue her protests, with even bigger signs next time and that:

“If someone wants to help me make a giant wooden labia, that would be great.”
