Good news for those of us – and oh, we number many – who are fond of good quality pizza and a few glasses of Prosecco.
Italian restaurant Cucina Asellina in Aldwych has launched a ‘bottomless Prosecco and unlimited pizzette’ deal, which does indeed, as one would suspect, consist of the very nearly unbeatable combination of unlimited pizza and fizz.
Pizzette are simply small pizzas (that the greedier among us may believe are all the better for fitting more in) and diners have 90-minute sittings to eat their fill. At £20 a head and available every evening between 4pm and 8pm, it’s undeniably good value.
Where once an all-you-can-eat experience might conjure mental images of sad buffets behind strangely ubiquitous plastic kale decoration, there’s now quality to be found. Cucina Asellina is a stylish eatery attached to the five-star ME London hotel and their pizzette are no reheated leftover margheritas: choose from five varieties, including confit tuna with onions, capers and gaeta olives and a calzone roast ham and artichoke, and there‘s even gluten-free available on request (visit the website for details).
And they’re not the only ones tempting discerning diners with top-notch food and drink available on unlimited offers in London.
The weekend brunches at The Cookbook Cafe in the Intercontinental London Park Lane (£49 per person, £58 on Sundays) champion British ingredients, seasonality and sustainability, and is a luxury yet family-friendly option given children under six eat free.
Main courses include duck, seafood and good old roasts on Sundays, eggs can be ordered any which way and you can help yourself to the 'Breakfast & Starter' and 'Cold Market' tables, featuring honey roast ham, smoked salmon, salads, sashimi, waffles, pancakes and more. There's a selection of desserts too, while Prosecco, Bellinis, teas, coffees, soft drinks and water are unlimited, and there's a two-hour table limit. It's buffet, but not as you know it.
Another option is award-winning Japanese restaurant Roka, which ordinarily isn't cheap by anyone's standards, but the £42 Koten Brunch at the Canary Wharf branch is good value given the array and quality of food. Make the most of unlimited starters from the counter, plus sharing platters, a hot main and dessert. There's a Bellini or Bloody Mary on arrival, while red and white wine is free-flowing.
It's also worth checking out Flesh & Buns from the same team as Bone Daddies - it's one of the closest things you'll get in London to a Japanese izakaya (similar to a pub in terms of socialising, but with added food).
At the weekend, Sunday Brunch includes their signature buns (steam buns to DIY with your choice of meat, fish, sauces and pickles), unlimited hot and cold dishes (including sushi, sashimi, seafood ceviche, yakitori and more) and a dessert. Drinks-wise, it's a cocktail on arrival and unlimited Prosecco all the way. It's £39 per person, or the £46 menu includes the more expensive small plates and buns.
Visions of ignored, limp salads and plastic sneeze guards begone – this is buffet 2.0, where quality and quantity come together in gastronomic harmony.
