Vicky McClure live: listen to her advice on how to be your authentic self

Posted by for Life

Line of Duty actor Vicky McClure will be joining us on our Stylist Live LUXE stage this year to talk about how to be your most authentic self. These are just five of the reasons we love her.

Stylist Luxe LUXE is preparing for the event of the year, which takes place in London in November. Among the inspirational and empowering speakers at the three-day event, the incredible line-up includes Elizabeth Day, Adam Kay, Jess Phillips and Candice Carty-Williams.

But, right now, we’re shining the spotlight on one of Saturday’s star speakers: Vicky McClure.

McClure is the Nottingham-born actor who has become a national treasure. She first came to our attention as Lol in Shane Meadows’ This Is England in 2006, before appearing in pretty much every mega TV series out there, from Broadchurch to Line of Duty. Currently preparing to film series six as DI Kate Fleming, Vicky has also produced and presented the BBC documentary series Our Dementia Choir about music therapy and neurological disorders. Most recently, she starred as in Channel 4’s I Am Nicola. which tackled the issue of coercive relationships.

So, to celebrate McClure’s upcoming talk, let’s take a look at five reasons why we love her so much.

1. She has the best advice for her younger self

Talking about what she’d say to her younger self about self-confidence, McClure told Stylist: “I’d be surprised if nobody’s suffered with self-confidence, either when you were young or now. But when you’re young, I think you just let it play on your mind for longer. The older I’ve got, the quicker I let it go. It’s harder to tell your younger self, you’ve got to learn it, you’ve got to live it.”

2. She knows her police acronyms (or not…)

Despite starring in one of the biggest TV shows of the year, playing a detective in a crime drama series, McClure was stumped by the end of our police acronyms test. When it came to ARU (which is actually armed response unit), McClure replied:. “No idea, have I said that?”

3. She supports dementia research

McClure, whose grandmother Iris lived with dementia and died in 2015, formed a choir of singers aged 31-87 who all live with dementia. Her two-part documentary, Our Dementia Choir, was McClure’s passion project, which helped raise awareness for dementia care and research. She is also an ambassador for Alzheimer’s Society.

4. She’s one of the most down-to-earth celebrities out there

McClure is the woman we all want in our friendships groups (fun, cool, dishes out sound advice – yes please!). And, if you find yourself in Nottingham anytime soon, you might just end up becoming pals with her. She recently told us:  “I love nothing more than being in town, nipping into a pub and talking to randoms, yet you feel like you’re best mates because you’re born and bred.”

5. She is one bloody talented actor

McClure blew us away in this year’s I Am Nicola, playing a woman in a coercive relationship. Speaking about her approach to the tough role, she reflected on her own experiences, telling Channel 4 News: “I think sometimes you allow it because you don’t really see it happening. That’s half the battle. And then you get to a point where you think ‘oh actually I’m not really doing what I really want to do’. I’m very lucky to have a loving fiancé now, who lets me fly, and I let him fly.”

Her performance was powerful, raw and emotional. And it was an essential watch.
