The traditional wedding list was a checklist of the essentials newlyweds needed to set up home. But now - given that the majority of modern couples see living together as a prerequisite to marriage - the towels, toasters, cutlery and, err carriage clocks, that used to be top choices have fallen out of favour.
According to a new survey from John Lewis, which reviewed over a century's worth of wedding lists for their store, our tastes have become a lot more luxe over the past few years. It highlighted how our change in living circumstances and lifestyle has seen couples desiring luxuries rather than necessities.
The £200 Nutribullet has replaced the humble toaster as the most popular wedding list item. And many couple's lists now total in excess of £20,000, with a £2,999 Sony television proving the most extravagant request.
Underlining recent changes in taste, the survey showed that in the last five years fad items digital photo frames, Wii Fit video games and mattresses have plummeted in popularity. Instead the quirkier items couples requested include bee houses and dumbbells.
"There is no doubt that couples are becoming more adventurous with what they put on their gift lists,” said Sara Allbright, gifts buyer at John Lewis.
“Rather than the traditional mainstays such as a canteen of cutlery or a carriage clock, we are seeing more statement pieces that reflect the personalities and interests of the couple."
Though Allbright added that the traditional home-making gift list hasn't fallen entirely out of favour: “Some have been known to have two lists, one for the classic essentials and key investment items and the other for quirky, fun things that they don’t necessarily need but do want.”
The survey didn't confirm which items were the most popular with guests, though we can safely bet that those heavy dumbbells wouldn't have been the first to be checked off.
