Christmas is so much more than food, presents and board games, it’s also about which retailer comes out on top in the race to the best festive advert.
In recent years, John Lewis’ powerful Christmas adverts have been known to reduce adults to tears and have become – much like the classic Coca Cola advert – a seasonal milestone, something to await with baited breath.
In fact, the co-op’s popular short films have become so successful that they’ve led other retailers to up their game. This year, we saw a deluge of high-budget, high-emotion adverts, all in competition to get the most tears out of viewers.
And now, H&M have thrown down the gauntlet, bringing out a Christmas short directed by none other than Oscar-nominated director, Wes Anderson.
Entitled, Come Together, H&M’s film is classic Anderson, shot in the retro pastel tones of the Royal Tenenbaums and The Darjeeling Limited.
The film stars actor Adrien Brody, from Anderson’s Grand Budapest Hotel, as the lead.
It takes place on a sleeper train, which is travelling through snowy climes on Christmas Eve. Brody plays the train’s conductor, and passengers are dressed in the store’s winter collection – a mix of loungewear and formal garb.
The advert “captures the holiday mood for both dressing up and getting cosy with loved ones,” says H&M’s head of design, Pernilla Wohlfahrt.
Southern Rail and Thameslink travellers will be familiar with the struggle of Anderson’s train, which sees a major delay. But will the conductor allow this to ruin Christmas for all the passengers? You’ll have to watch the film to find out, but Brody says:
“This story may resonate more than ever at a time in the world where we could all do with giving a stranger a hug.”
