What really makes us happy

It turns out that it really is the little things that count when it comes to feeling good.

According to a new study, nearly two-thirds of the 1,056 UK women polled said that nice weather put them in a good mood, while half of the group agreed that getting their hair done was more of a confidence booster than a gym session or going on a date. Hmm, a sweaty workout versus a glossy new hairdo – yes, we know which one we’d choose!

Old-fashioned compliments rated highly too with the selection of 25-45 year old women, with more than a third saying that a compliment (41 per cent) or a nice text message (35 per cent) was more of an instant mood-elevator than eating chocolate. So forget winning the lottery – get a compliment about your new hairstyle on a sunny day and you know you're on to a good thing.

The survey was commissioned by Appletiser to launch its new drinks campaign.

What do you think? Are compliments and a sunny day enough to put you in a good mood? Tell us what you think on Twitter or in the comments section below.
