What makes you happy? A new dress? A bonus? A diamond ring?
They’ll probably make you thrilled for a moment or two, sure, but we all know that the best things in life are free. It's the pitter-patter of rain on the window as you snuggle into bed, the sound of a boiling kettle or even, to borrow from our friend Maria, brown paper packages tied up with string.
Artists Lisa Swerling and Ralph Lazar have picked up on this simple idea, creating adorable and heart-warming illustrations that perfectly capture those all-important, but oft overlooked moments. Their simple messiness appeals to our inner child.
The duo call themselves Last Lemon, and they post their illustrations on The Happy Page- which boasts over 2.5 million followers. They’ve even published a book of their images.
Speaking to Bustle, Lisa Swerling said that the idea came from the innate differences the couple share. Lisa finds happiness in the simple things in life, whereas her husband Ralph gets his thrills from adventure.
“So we started making a list of the random happy things that happen every day, and we were surprised by how many there were – the list was inexhaustible,” says Swerling.
“The ideas came fast and easy, and the illustrations were simple and somehow managed to capture the essence of each moment,” she continues, so the pair decided to create a Facebook page.
People began to post their own happy suggestions on the page, and now Lazar draws around 24 illustrations every day, to keep up with the demand.
The Facebook mission statement is: “To make the world a happier place”, and calls for submissions from all over the world.
So, what really makes us happy? We found some key themes in people's submissions…
