Who can resist a cocktail with a garnish of gender equality?
London is lucky enough to boast a plethora of world-renowned cocktail bars, squirreled away in various secret nooks and crannies of the city. So many that you’d be forgiven for not having patronised them all. But we’d highly advise any lovers of refined drinking spots make their way down to Shoreditch bar, The Gibson on the 20 November (aka tonight) because they’ll be able to enjoy an internationally famous cocktail for only £1.
Yes, we know it sounds too good to be true. But it’s real and it’s happening. The Gibson, a gorgeous and intimate 1920s saloon that regularly appears on multiple ‘World’s Best Bars’ lists, is celebrating its third birthday in partnership with Copperhead Gin – and to do so, they’ve decided to team up with women’s charity The Fawcett Society.
Head down there from 5pm today to be one of the recipients of one thousand Gibson Martinis (the twist is a pickled cocktail onion which adds sweetness) served by the staff, who are headed up by industry titan Marian Beke (formerly of equally famed London haunt Nightjar). Each drink is £1; and every pound is going to The Fawcett Society, the organisation originally established by suffragette Millicent Fawcett in 1866, to further their projects.
Which, as it goes, currently include work to close the gender pay gap, a drive to ensure women’s rights aren’t eroded by Brexit and efforts to increase female representation in politics. So, you know, nothing serious.
The Gibson’s decision to support a feminist cause is part of a growing trend across 2018 that has seen attractions and events increasingly embrace themes of gender equality. From bottomless brunches that let you swap tampons for cocktails to raise awareness of period poverty to suffragette musicals, we’re starting to put the issue at the forefront of even more light-hearted cultural pursuits. And to be honest, who would say no to some empowerment when it comes packaged in forms as delicious as a first-rate martini at the end of a long working day?
