We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – you have to be able to ask for what you deserve. Once you’re clear on what you need financially, you’re in a great position to be able to negotiate for this.

“Being able to advocate for yourself is a key part of financial empowerment,” says Galloway. “Whether it’s salary negotiation or asking a promotion, assertiveness and knowing your worth play a vital role.”

Do your research

If you’re asking for a pay rise, it’s no good going in blind. Find out market rates for your role, talk to others and think about your achievements – why are you worth what you’re asking for?

“Do your research so you can confidently communicate your value,” says Galloway. “This is where your financial literacy will come in handy, as without it, you could risk not knowing how much you should be getting paid.”
