Song’s Past Lives also only received two nominations, for best picture and best original screenplay. It makes you think, though; if this is a film that’s been recognised as one of the best films of the year, why isn’t its director being recognised too?

Industry awards have long had issues with inclusion and representing diverse talent; it isn’t simply a Hollywood problem. Who could forget the Brit Awards failing to nominate a single woman in its best artist category last year? But it seems as if we’re having the same conversation over and over again with next to nothing changing for people from diverse backgrounds who are attempting to access and succeed in these fields.

It’s 2024, and we’re still talking about majority male shortlists.

Yes, awards aren’t everything and the majority of filmmakers and directors will likely say they don’t create and produce films to get a trophy or their name in lights. But why shouldn’t they? A film being recognised by their peers will open up doors to so many more opportunities for female directors, especially those making their debut or in the early stages of their careers. The likes of Gerwig and Song deserve their flowers too, just as their male colleagues get year in and year out.
