Charmed and 90201 actress Shannen Doherty has shared an insight into one of the emotional stages of battling breast cancer.

The actress, who first revealed she had been diagnosed in August 2015, took to Instagram with a series of six powerful black and white photos documenting the process of shaving her head.

The first photo shows Doherty, 45, being embraced by her mother, Rosa Elizabeth Doherty.

She's then captured cutting her hair short with scissors before her friend Anne Marie Kortright lends a hand in shaving her head for her.

In the final photo she poses with her head held high, with strands of shaved hair strewn across her back, revealing her new mohawk cut.

Doherty first confirmed that she was undergoing treatment for breast cancer and with a statement to People, reading: "Yes, I have breast cancer, and I am currently undergoing treatment."

"I am continuing to eat right, exercise and stay very positive about my life," she said.

"I am thankful to my family, friends and doctors for their support and, of course, my fans who have stood by me."

The photo series has received overwhelming support from Doherty's followers and fellow breast cancer sufferers who've reached out with words of support, advice and identification.

"Stay brave and strong. These photos just showing how beautiful you are," wrote one user. While another shared: "I'm currently going through breast cancer too. [...] I want you to know that you will get through this. On the days where you feel sad find the beauty in the day and use it to keep your worried heart strong." [sic]
