Amy Schumer, who is currently on a major stand-up tour around the US, had a bit of a tricky show on Sunday night.

The comedian was performing in Tampa, Florida, when she started talking about Donald Trump. As you’re no doubt aware, the world’s most dubiously coiffed presidential nominee has faced a slew of historical sexual assault allegations over the last few weeks, after at least nine women came forward to claim he groped or kissed them without their permission.

Schumer, herself a sexual assault survivor, used her set on Sunday to voice her opinions on Trump, saying that the allegations made against him had been “real triggering” and calling him an “orange, sexual-assaulting, fake-college-starting monster”.

She also brought a Trump supporter on stage to explain why he was voting Republican, before inviting all the sexual assault survivors in the audience to stand up.

But Florida is a swing-state with plenty of Trump supporters, and Schumer’s comments prompted some 200 people to leave the Amalie Arena in protest. One man who walked out of Schumer’s show told the Tampa Bay Times: “I don’t want to hear that. We wanted to have a good night without distractions with the politics.”

Now, Schumer has shared an open letter she wrote to the Floridians who walked out of her show.

During another set at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, Schumer apologised – with her tongue firmly in her cheek – to anyone who was offended by her comments about Trump.

“Dearest Tampa, I’m sorry you didn’t want me, a comedian who talks about what she believes in, to mention the biggest thing going on in our country right now," she said.

“How could I think it was OK to spend five minutes having a peaceful conversation with someone with different views?”

She added: “After the show, I want you to know that I will go straight to a rehab facility that will teach me how to make all people happy. Both the rich, entitled, white people who are gonna vote for him and the very poor people, who’ve been tricked into it.”

“And Tampa, I’m so sorry,” Schumer continued. “I shouldn’t have said that he was an orange, sexually-assaulting, fake-college-starting monster. Shouldn’t have said that. I will never again say that he is an orange, sexual-assaulting, fake-college-starting monster! Ever again.”

Later, Schumer told the audience in New York: “I look forward to putting this all behind us in a couple of weeks when Hillary Clinton is our MOTHERFUCKING PRESIDENT!”

Amen, Amy.
