With over a decade in the music industry who better than the Irish-born DJ to recommend the new artists and songs to download now…
There are not many questions that can stop a smart woman in her tracks. The seemingly innocuous, “What music are you into right now?” has the strange power to do just that. “Take That,” “The Smiths” and “Arcade Fire” are hardly going to set a contemporary muso’s imagination alight, but when you can barely find time to sleep, researching new music slips quite low on the to-do list.
Sometimes BBC 6 Music just isn’t enough, so we asked Radio 1’s legendary Annie Mac to build us a brand-new playlist. Luckily she’s been doing just that in her new role as curator of the Vinyl Collection for the W Hotel in London. So, here’s what she recommends you download. Today. Right now… Go.
“I’m in love with Lorde, who is 16 and from New Zealand. She’s an example of someone who has penetrated the industry pretty quickly. She’s like Adele, but whereas Adele can sound quite retro, Lorde is very now.”
“One-man band Bipolar Sunshine really stands out for me. He has a very lush sound; the songs are anthemic in the same way as The Killers are but they’re also indie and accessible.”
Download: Love More And Worry Less
“FKA Twigs is a super-stylish singer from London who has a mellow, futuristic R&B sound which reminds me of Solange. But her songs are pretty left of centre.”
Download: Water Me
“All my bets next year will be on MNEK. He’s a great songwriter. He’s collaborated with everyone from Little Mix to Sub Focus and I love the way he mixes up old songs by George Michael and Janet Jackson and makes them totally new.”
Download: Hold On (with Duke Dumont)
“Lulu James’s sound is in the same vein as Jessie Ware – she has that sultry, disco-style voice and has worked with a lot of similar producers.”
Download: Sweetest Thing
