Any Human Heart goes to war

Published

As the weather turns frosty, TV bigwigs seem to up their game by putting on "must-stay-in" TV. Sunday night’s new treat, replacing Downton Abbey in our affections, is Channel 4’s four-part drama series Any Human Heart.

Adapted from William Boyd’s best-selling novel, the story charts the extraordinary life and loves of author Logan Mountstuart. A visual feast, boasting a brilliant cast of acting talent: Jim Broadbent, Matthew Macfadyen, Hayley Atwell, Tom Hollander, Kim Cattrall and Gillian Anderson are just a handful of the cast.

If you missed Sunday’s opening episode, the action followed Logan’s early life as author and journalist and his turbulent love life, from losing his virginity to marrying Lottie Edgefield and falling for lover Freya Deverell.

Episode 2 sees Logan reporting from the front line of the Spanish Civil War and the outbreak of World War II. With the world in turmoil, Logan has encounters with icons of the era including Ernest Hemingway (who else would you want love advice from?), Ian Fleming and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor's lover Wallis Simpson, brilliantly played by Gillian Anderson. As the world seems to fall apart around him, will his relationship with lover Freya survive?
