A best-selling US author who was stalked for seven years by a British man she met on a plane journey has described the ordeal as “a peek into the dark side of insanity” - but says she forgives her abuser.
Kristine Carlson, 52, spoke out after British wedding photographer Mark Jury was jailed for four-and-a-half years this week after admitting stalking the self-help writer and her daughter, Kenna, 23.
Jury, 40, struck up conversation with Kristine when the pair were seated next to each other on a 10-hour flight from Los Angeles to Heathrow in 2008.
What followed was a relentless campaign of harassment against the mother and daughter that Kristine describes as “emotional rape” .
“As a family of women, we were seen as weak without our man,” says Kristine, who was widowed in 2006.
“Within weeks after that flight, he began reaching out to me through my website,” Kristine explains. “Over the years his campaign escalated and there were one hundred ways he reached out to us daily through every communication means and delusion - he felt entitled to be part of our lives.”
Jury used up to 30 online aliases to harass Kristine and her then-teenage daughter - who he referred to as his “wife,” Wales Online reports.
In one Twitter message directed at Kristine, he told her he was “going to f**k Kenna every day for the rest of her life.”
Jury attempted to blackmail the Don't Sweat the Small Stuff author and travelled to the US in an attempt to meet Kenna.
Despite his “relentless campaign,” Kristine says it was difficult to prosecute Jury because they are based in different countries.
He was finally stopped when FBI investigators passed on a file to UK police.
Judge Richard Twomlow told Jury, who is from Llangattock, near Brecon in Wales, he is a "delusional and fixational stalker".
Speaking of the sentence, Kristine says: “I hold only forgiveness for Mark Jury and his obsession.”
“It was a peek into the dark side of insanity,” she says. “But it all has a way of working out as I stay in tune to my heart-letting go of fear and filling up with love.”
