Essentially, trademarking a name protects it from being used by other people and companies, particularly ones who might want to use the names to try and profit from them.

For example, TMZ reports that the trademark applications for Rumi and Sir Carter include protection from those names being used for “fragrances, cosmetics, key chains, baby teething rings, strollers, mugs, water bottles, hair ribbons, playing cards, tote bags, sports balls, rattles and novelty items”.

And it appears to be a smart move, with Inc reporting that just a few days after Blue Ivy’s birth back in 2012 companies were already attempting to register the names “Blue Ivy Carter NYC” for a children’s clothing brand and “Blue Ivy Carter Glory IV” for a line of fragrances.

The birth of the twins is yet to be confirmed by either Beyoncé or Jay Z, and the pair have released no official statement, although they are rumoured to have been born last month.

Despite the lack of official statement regarding the arrival of the twins, Beyoncé’s dad, Matthew Knowles, appeared to confirm the birth of his daughter’s twins two weeks ago when he took on the role of excited grandparent by taking to social media to write, “They're here! #beyonce #twins #jayz #happybirthday.”

And the post was even ‘liked’ by Beyoncé’s mum, Tina Knowles, adding to speculation that the twins had been born.
