The BRIT Awards 2013 with Mastercard nominations were announced by Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw in a ceremony today at the Savoy Hotel – with Jessie Ware, Mercury Prize winners Alt J and Emeli Sande receiving more than one nomination.
Among the acts vying for the coveted BRIT statue (designed this year by Damien Hirst), 2012's Critic's Choice Award-winner Emeli Sande emerged as the most likely to take home an gong, appearing in three categories: British Female Solo Artist, British Single and MasterCard British Album of The Year.
One of the most highly contested categories looks set to be The British Female Solo award, with (Stylist favourite) Jessie Ware and Paloma Faith up against Emeli Sandé, who performed at both the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, and the late Amy Winehouse, recognized for her album Lioness: Hidden Treasures which went to Number 1 in the Official UK Album Chart in December 2011.
After stellar performances from Critic’s Choice 2013 award-winner Tom Odell (Jessie Ware also took the stage later in the evening), the acts to perform at next month’s ceremony were also confirmed, with Best Live Act nominees Mumford & Sons, One Direction and Robbie Williams all featuring on the line-up. Broadcast on the 20 February on ITV, and hosted by James Corden, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled to see if there’s any controversy similar to last year’s awards, when Adele was cut-off mid-acceptance speech. She was nominated for Best Single for the Bond theme Skyfall – so we’ll have to wait and see…
