There’s a lighthearted but pointed feminist message to Boys, too, in the way it cheerfully centres the female gaze. Women are often heavily sexualised in music videos by male artists, in a way that doesn’t always seem like much fun. (It’s difficult to watch DJ Khaled’s recent video for I’m the One, for example, without thinking that the scores of anonymous bikini-clad babes look a little bored – and chilly.)

Boys flips that trope on its head by inviting us to bask in the gorgeousness of its subjects, without ever denying them their personalities or dignity. From Tinie Tempah to Riz Ahmed, the men in Charli XCX’s video look like genuinely nice guys. They look like they’re having a laugh. It’s a treat to watch, but it also looks like it was a blast to make. It’s hard to think of a male-directed music video that gives a wide cast of women the same treatment, and it offers us a new blueprint for what we should demand from pop stars in future.
