Aside from providing a platform for our own online mutterings, social media has long supplied a tantalising glimpse into the lives of those more glamorous than us.
But one Australian comedian is proving how unrealistic celebrities' ‘everyday’ pictures are by recreating them herself.
Over the course of 2015, Celeste Barber's Instagram parodies have earned her hundreds of thousands of followers and now she's putting her own spin on last year's most popular posts.
“Some celebrities on Instagram seem to think we, non-rich, non-privileged people are idiots and believe that what they are posting is real,” Celeste tells BuzzFeed. “I wanted to try to show how ridiculous it would be for a ‘normal’ person to recreate some of these photos.”
“People are so obsessed with celebrities and celebrities seem to be so obsessed with portraying everyday people,” Barber told the ABC. “I thought, right, if this is what everyone does - challenge accepted.”
But Barber stresses that her spoofs are not about “bashing” those in the public eye, but simply pointing out how their images are sometimes slightly ridiculous.
“I’m very pro-woman. I don’t want to be bashing people like Kim K, I actually think ‘good on her.’ I think she is a smart businesswoman,” she said. “From hailing a cab like J.Lo to beachside yoga sessions - I want to see if I can live like the privileged, rich and famous.”
She told the Daily Mail: “Kim Kardashian posing in a pile of dirt - who does that in real life? Really I am turning the mirror back on the celebrities as I am very pro-woman and I get frustrated when people say you should be or act a certain way.”
