John David Washington was asked about “being the son of Denzel Washington”. His response was beyond brilliant.

John David Washington recently appeared on the Today show to discuss his role in Spike Lee’s critically-acclaimed new movie, BlacKkKlansman.

During the interview, reporter Craig Melvin decided to ask Washington what it was like growing up in the world of showbiz - reasonable enough question, considering who Washington’s parents are. However, Melvin referred only to Washington’s Oscar-winning father Denzel, unintentionally disregarding his mother, Pauletta, in the process.

“Being the son of Denzel Washington…” he began.

It was at this point that Washington leaned in to interrupt Melvin, stating: “And Pauletta Washington.”

The BlacKkKlansman actor didn’t stop there, either, and went on to highlight his mother’s considerable achievements.

“She was earning more money than he was before they got married. She was on Broadway working and she paid for the first date, paid the bill, paid for the cab ride…

“She’s a classically-trained pianist, went to Julliard. She’s a great artist in her own right and I learned a lot from her.”

Ending on a powerful note, Washington said: “My father taught me how to hunt, my mother taught me how to love.”

Amen. You can watch the moment for yourself below:

It is worth noting that Denzel and Pauletta have been married for more than 35 years, after tying the knot in 1983.

And Washington’s father would no doubt agree with his son’s glowing reference of Pauletta, as he himself has described her as his “hero” in the past.

Indeed, sharing the secrets to their happy marriage earlier this year, Denzel told People: “I do what I’m told, keep my mouth shut. It’s many so many things: security, food, a beautiful home.

“You can buy a house, but that doesn’t make it a home. My wife has made our house a home… She did the heavy lifting.”

One thing’s for sure: Denzel and Pauletta make a great team, and they have certainly succeeded in raising a son who’s not afraid to stand up for what he believes in.
