Are you ready for a whole new world?
With excitement levels at an all-time high for the new live-action Aladdin film – which stars Will Smith (Genie), Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Naomi Scott (Princess Jasmine) and Marwan Kenzari (Jafar) – it makes that Disney have decided to drop the first trailer.
Yup, that’s right: just days after Smith asked us to “choose wisely”, we’ve been given our first look at Guy Ritchie’s update on the animated classic.
Given that it’s still very early days (the film isn’t slated for release until 2019), Disney has made sure not to give too much away.
However, as well as some gorgeous sweeping visuals of Agrabah, the studio also offers us a glimpse of Iago (who reportedly won’t have a speaking role in this film, unlike the original) – and, of course, a shot or two of our titular hero in action.
Are you ready for a whole new world? Then step (or fly, if you have a magic carpet to hand) this way…
Within moments of the trailer dropping, social media was flooded with reactions from misty-eyed viewers.
And, suffice to say, the majority of folk are very excited for this movie.
Check it out:
However, there were, of course, those who wanted more.
Or, specifically, more skin on show.
Hmm. Presumbly this means that Jasmine will also be swapping her cropped bralet top for something that’ll keep her warm in those desert winds.
We will have to wait and see, though, as she hasn’t been included in this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it trailer.
The film is based on the 1992 Disney animation of the same name, which drew inspiration from One Thousand and One Nights tales.
However, while the cartoon version of Aladdin included many songs that have since become staples for many Disney fans (think A Whole New World and Friend Like Me), it remains to be seen if the live-action version will make like Emma Watson’s Beauty & The Beast and update the soundtrack with some new tracks.
Then again, it may not include any musical elements whatsoever. Which will, presumably, devastate Disney lovers all over the world.
As well as Smith, Massoud, Scott and Kenzari, the new Aladdin cast includes Homeland’s Navid Negahban as the Sultan, and Nasim Pedrad (Saturday Night Live) as Dalia, Princess Jasmine’s handmaiden and confidant.
Ritchie is directing from a script he co-wrote with Vanessa Taylor and John August.
The new Aladdin movie will premiere on 24 May 2019.
