A 59-year-old musician and former menswear designer, Sade sits in the pantheon of super-stellar UK performers. Diamond Life, her 1984 debut as Sade (also the name of the band she performs with), held the record for the bestselling first record by a female vocalist until 2008.

Awarded a CBE for services to music in the Queen’s 2017 birthday honours list, she’s been cited as a musical inspiration by everyone from Beyoncé (who wrote her an open letter in 2012) to heavy metal musicians. Whole articles have been written on Sade’s influence on hip-hop, while Drake has not one, but two Sade tattoos.

Alongside Sade, DuVernay has announced that the soundtrack for A Wrinkle in Time will also feature original music from Sia, duo Chloe x Halle and Demi Lovato.

“My hope was to gather dynamic women artists to craft a majestic soundtrack for Meg’s journey,” the Oscar-nominated director tweeted last night, whilst unveiling the artists who’d contributed to the film. “WRINKLE IN TIME was made [with] love for young people [to] share ideas about being a light in this often dark world.”

The music for A Wrinkle in Time isn’t the only exciting thing about the Disney blockbuster. The first ever film with a budget of over $100 million to be directed by a woman of colour, it also stars an incredible female powerhouse cast. Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling will take lead roles in the cross-dimensional adventure as three astro-travellers who help a young girl rescue her astrophysicist father.
