Eddie Redmayne and his wife Hannah Bagshawe have opted for a traditional name for their new daughter, naming the tot Iris Mary.

Bagshawe, 33, gave birth to the couple's first baby last Wednesday, just in time for Redmayne, 34, to celebrate his first Father's Day yesterday.

The pair, who were friends at school before becoming a couple in 2012 and marrying in 2014, had previously said they didn't want to know the sex of their baby before it was born.

Speaking to Extra at the Oscars in February, Redmayne said, "I was like, 'Maybe we should find out' [and] my wife’s like, 'We’re not finding out.' She wears the trousers."

"It's one of the great surprises that still exists in the world," he added.

Redmayne also revealed the couple would ideally like to give their daughter a more traditional upbringing, complete with old fashioned wooden toys.

"We have this sort of dream of like wooden toys, and all that," he said.

"And everyone's like, 'Yeah you always start off like that, but you end up with like, iPhones!''

Redmayne and Bagshawe aren't the only celebrity couple to opt for a vintage name for their child, but while names from the early 20th century are enjoying something of a resurgence, popular monikers from the fifties and sixties such as Sandra, Debbie and Carol could be facing extinction.

Redmayne is currently filming the first of a new Harry Potter film trilogy, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
