Emily Blunt is cast as Mary Poppins in new Disney film

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious news for Disney fans this morning: Emily Blunt has been cast as Mary Poppins in an upcoming remake of the iconic film.

The new film will also star Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the hit Broadway musical Hamilton, as Jack, a new character who works as a lamplighter.

Called Mary Poppins Returns, the film will be released on Christmas Day 2018, over 50 years since the original film starring Julie Andrews was released in 1964.

Mary Poppins Returns will tell the story of a grown up Jane and Michael Banks as they are visited, along with Michael's three children, by Poppins following a “personal loss”. Set in Depression-era London, the film will see Poppins, with the assistance of Jack, using a sprinkle of magic to bring joy back into the family's lives.

The film will be directed by Rob Marshall, who has previously directed hits including Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha.

Speaking of the news in a statement, he said, “The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation.”

Mary Poppins was the brainchild of author P. L. Travers, who published the first of eight books about the magical nanny in 1934.

British actress Blunt, 33, is currently expecting her second child with husband John Krasinki.
