Having left his prom plans to the last minute a 17-year-old from Arizona, named Jacob Staudenmaier, decided to aim high with his choice of date. He wanted to ask Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone. So he decided the best way to invite her was to create a musical video inspired by her latest movie, La La Land.

In the elaborate skit, he sings a version of the movie’s hit opening song Another Day of Sun, where the cast are stuck in traffic.

His version of the lyrics see him invite Stone to join him at the Arcadia High School prom and to go for dinner at his favourite restaurant, Olive Garden.

Staudenmaier even mentions the fact that he bares more than a passing resemblance to her co-star, Ryan Gosling.

“People say I look like Ryan Gosling, and maybe that’s a bit far-fetched” he sings.

The video went viral thanks to Staudenmaier’s excellent direction

And he even has Olive Garden’s seal of approval.

Since it was published online, the video has now racked up over a quarter of a million views – including one from Stone herself.

And the actress was so moved by the skit that she has now issued a response to the teen’s valiant invitation.

Stone wrote him a hand-written note explaining why she – sadly – has to turn him down. However it wasn’t all bad news, as she also added that he does look pretty similar to Gosling:

“Jacob, thanks for making the greatest proposal I have ever received,” she wrote.

“I can’t tell you what an honor that was and how much I smiled through that entire beautifully orchestrated video. I’m in London working, but I hope you have the best time at prom, and I’m grateful you thought of me. Thank you.

“P.S. I do see Gosling around the eyes.

“Love, Emma.”

Even though Staudenmaier now has to find another date, we’re pretty sure he’ll treasure the note forever.
