Watch Michelle Obama take one last look around the White House

Tomorrow, the Obama family will attend Donald Trump’s swearing-in ceremony on Capitol Hill. Protocol dictates that once the inauguration is over, they won’t return to the White House that’s been their home for the last eight years. Instead, after watching Trump take the oath of office, they’ll move into a new home – a rented mansion in Kalorama, one of Washington’s poshest districts.

Even if they weren’t having to hand the front door keys over to a scandal-blighted human Cheeto, the family’s last few days in the White House were bound to be emotional. On Wednesday, Michelle Obama shared some of her final moments as First Lady in a video on social media – and however you feel about the imminent Trump presidency, it can’t fail to tug at the heartstrings.

In the video, posted on Instagram and Twitter, Obama is seen greeting the family’s dogs, Sunny and Bo, in one of the White House halls. Then it’s off to take one last stroll around the White House – with the dogs in tow, naturally.

“Taking it in on one last walk through the People’s House,” wrote Obama.

Twitter predictably went into meltdown, with many people calling on the Obamas to just, you know, not leave.

Dawn O’Porter said what we were all thinking:

Others, meanwhile, commended Obama for what she had achieved as First Lady.

“For the first time in my life, the First Family felt like part of my family,” wrote @TrishDoller. “You will be so missed.”

The first African-American First Lady is leaving the White House with a 68% approval rating from the American people, according to the latest polls – well above her husband’s outgoing approval rating of 58%. In contrast, Trump is entering the White House with an approval rating of 44%, described by the Wall Street Journal and NBC News as the lowest rating ever for an incoming president.
