Friends cast to reunite in one-off special next month

It's the news we've all been hoping for, but never really believed would come true.

The cast of Friends are set to reunite for a two-hour show, more than 10 years after the iconic comedy sitcom came to an end.

The fact that Ross, Rachel and co. will be back on our screens was announced by the TV channel NBC at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Pasadena, California, today.

It is expected that all six original cast members - Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer - will make the televised reunion.

"I’m hoping all six will be in the same room at the same time, I’m not sure we can logistically can pull it off," said NBC chief Robert Greenblatt.

The special programme will be filmed later this month and is set to hit screens on 21 February. It has been created as a tribute to American sitcom director James Burrows, who directed 15 episodes of Friends back in the day.

The show will mark Burrows' direction of his 1,000th TV episode, and will also reunite cast of other popular TV comedies he's worked on over the years, including Taxi, Cheers, Frasier and Will & Grace.

The idea of a Friends reunion has been mooted over the years, although Aniston - arguably the highest-profile member of the original cast - has previously commented that “it ended at the right time when people still wanted more”.

Although they've embarked on different paths since the show's 2004 wrap, the programme's stars have stayed in touch. Cox was maid of honour at Aniston's wedding to Justin Theroux last August, with Kudrow also in attendance as a guest.

Created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, Friends was a cult hit that epitomised what it was like to be a twenty-something grappling with life, love and more. The finale alone was watched by 52.5 million viewers when it was broadcast in May 2004 - and episodes such as the first Ross 'n Rachel kiss went down in TV history.
