Actress Gabrielle Union calls out a news outlet for referring to her as “Dwyane Wade’s wife”.
From revealing that she was raped at the age of 19 to discussing her own pregnancy struggles, Gabrielle Union has always made a point of being open and honest about her life. Why? Because she respects her fans, 100%.
Somewhat surprisingly, though, Union doesn’t demand much in return. All she asks is that people do her the common courtesy of referring to her by her name.
The accomplished actress-come-author-come-model recently donated $200,000 (£144,000) to the planned gun control rally in Washington DC, March For Our Lives. However, when local Miami news station, WSVN, wrote about her kind gesture they failed to use her name, instead opting to refer to Union as “Dwyane Wade’s wife”.
Of course, Union – who is a women’s rights advocate – didn’t let the sexist coverage go unnoticed. Taking to Twitter, Union called them out on it.
“When they let you know what they think of you. I have a name,” Union wrote.
WSVN responded by apologising, “You’re right. We have apologised, and will have a word with this writer.”

And other people called them out on it too.
“‘Majorly accomplished actress and model, Gabrielle Union donates $200,000 to gun control rally’ sounds way better to me anyway,” comedian Akilah Hughes wrote.

Like Union, we also can’t believe this is still happening in 2018.
