Adele, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and the cast of Girls were among the winners in the 70th Golden Globes in Hollywood this weekend.
Adele, who appeared for the first time in public since giving birth to her son in October, picked up best song for her Bond theme tune Skyfall. The singer said the award was "surreal and hilarious," adding: "I feel a bit over-excited; it's my first night out since having my child." An emotional Jessica Chastain paid tribute to director Kathryn Bigelow for her best actress win for bin Laden drama Zero Dark Thirty, telling her: "You’ve done more for women in cinema than you take credit for."
There were moving scenes too as Jodie Foster collected the Cecil B DeMille award for outstanding contribution to entertainment. The usually very private actress made reference to her sexuality, saying "this is not going to be a big coming out speech tonight because I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago back in the stone age." She then honoured her mother, who suffers from dementia, saying: "I love you, I love you, I love you and I hope if I say this three times, it will magically and perfectly enter into your soul, fill you with grace and the joy of knowing that you did good in this life." Several people, including Anne Hathaway, were pictured in tears during her speech, which Girls star Lena Dunham later described as "mind-blowingly beautiful."
It was a good night for Girls, which scooped both best comedy TV series and best performance in a comedy for Dunham. Epic musical drama Les Mis also performed well picking up best actor for Hugh Jackman, best supporting actress for Anne Hathaway and best musical motion picture. The Globes are generally regarded as an indicator of next month's Oscar winners, meaning Ben Affleck and George Clooney's Iran-based adventure flick Argo could do well; it won best drama motion picture and best director (for Affleck) at the Globes.
TV thriller Homeland did well too; despite a mixed reaction to its second season, it picked up awards in three major categories, including best actress for Claire Danes and best actor for Damian Lewis.
Meanwhile, co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took the reigns from previous Golden Globes MC Ricky Gervais in style, with a string of wisecracks and stunts. They had earlier vowed to be funny rather than "send anyone home in tears."
