Gossip Girl may have hit our screens ten years ago, but it’s still hard to reconcile the fact that Blake Lively and Leighton Meester’s real names aren’t Serena and Blair.
Lively, of course, played the former – and the actor has since gone on to star in the likes of The Age of Adeline, The Shallows, Green Lantern, and more. She’s even got her very own version of Big Little Lies in the pipeline, too.
Yet, no matter how many years go by, she’ll always be Serena ‘Lady, Your Boyfriend is the Real-Life Gossip Girl’ van der Woodsen to us, which is why we were so surprised to learn that another famous actor was originally up for the role.
Jennifer Lawrence – as in, yes, the Oscar-winning star of The Hunger Games and Silver Linings Playbook – auditioned for the role of Serena way back when she was a teenager.
Josh Schwartz, creator of the dearly missed teen show, made the revelation to Vulture, saying: “We did not realise this at the time, but Jennifer Lawrence really wanted to play Serena [van der Woodsen] and auditioned.
“This story came to us second-hand, but we were told she definitely auditioned and was bummed to not get it.”
Schwartz continued: “We can't remember if we saw [her audition tape] or not. It was ten years ago, and she would've been how old, 15?”
Lawrence’s career definitely wasn’t harmed by this early rejection: the actor is currently making waves for her role in controversial psychological thriller, Mother! – which sees her take on the guise of ‘Mother Nature’ and the Virgin Mary all in one.
Meanwhile the role of Serena, as we all know, went to Lively – and TV history was made. So it’s unsurprising to learn that the actor is well and truly up for a revival of the show that put her name on the (Hollywood) map.
“Of course. I’m open to anything that’s good, that’s interesting, and that sort of feels necessary… I imagine we all would (consider it),” Lively told Vanity Fair.
“I can’t speak for everyone else, but we all owe so much to this show, and I think that it would be silly not to acknowledge that.”
However Meester has ruled against a reunion, telling Rogue Magazine: “I started Gossip Girl 10 years ago when I was 20, and I'm 30 now.
“I loved doing it, and now I'm doing something else that I love, and something new that's a little bit more my taste as a 30 year old, something I've grown into.”
In the meantime, we guess all we can do is binge-watch re-runs of the series on Netflix. We’ll see you on the sofa…
