The Oscar-nominated actress, writer and director definitely caught her fans by surprise with this announcement.
Greta Gerwig – aka the fifth woman ever to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director, thanks to her 2017 film Lady Bird – has confirmed that she and her partner, Noah Baumbach, have welcomed a baby together.
So far, so normal celebrity baby announcement. However, the news certainly caught Gerwig’s fans by surprise, as the director, writer and actress had not revealed that she was expecting before the birth announcement. Presumably because she had far more important things to do… like, say, working on her star-studded remake of Little Women, which is due to air in UK cinemas later this year.
Gerwig’s rep confirmed the news to People, but only after a slew of speculative headlines hit the press (she and Baumbach had been photographed pushing a pram through the streets of Manhattan).
“Noah was pushing and Greta was right next to him. They were chatting and enjoying some fresh air,” an eyewitness confidently informed E! News, clearly of the opinion that simply stepping outdoors counts as ‘enjoying the fresh air’.
“They were bundled up in the chilly weather and they had a grey and white striped blanket draped over the stroller. It seemed like the baby was sleeping because they were busy talking and didn’t have to tend to the baby.”
Right.
Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach
Of course, Gerwig – who is famed for keeping her private life just that – decided to confirm reports in a bid to prevent further speculation.
However, she made sure to have her rep keep the statement as brief as possible: rather than go into details about the birth and the baby’s name/gender, they simply said that, yes, Gerwig and Baumbach were now parents. The implication being, of course, that it’s nobody’s business really, and can we move on?
Gerwig and Baumbach first met when her cast Gerwig in his 2010 film Greenberg. The rest, as they say, is history: the duo have collaborated on a number of projects since, and have been quietly dating for several years.
While they rarely speak about their relationship, Gerwig did open up about forgetting to thank Baumbach in her Golden Globe speech while accepting the award for best original screenplay.
“I had an entire speech that I was going to give and I got up there and none of it came out,” she said, during an interview with The View. “I looked at Oprah and I was like, ‘It’s gone!’, [but] I had a whole thing about him. He’s my favourite writer and my favourite first reader.”
Naturally, Baumbach didn’t take offense.
“I got off stage and then as I was coming back to the table, he was already looking at me and he said, ‘Please don’t feel bad, please don’t feel bad!’” she recalled.
In a 2013 interview with The Globe and Mail, Baumbach similarly piled praise on Gerwig, saying, “Greta’s one of the funniest people I’d ever met, both as an actor and a person, and she also has this incredible vulnerability.”
In the same interview, Gerwig spoke about their creative relationship, saying, “We never specifically talk about how it works. In some ways, you don’t want to know too much about why; you don’t want to mess with it.”
She continued: “I’ve never been in a band, but I feel it must be what it feels like to write music with someone. I’m certainly not comparing myself to Lennon and McCartney, but they wrote great stuff on their own, and when they wrote together they made something greater than the sum of its parts.”
“You can’t account for it; it’s almost like a third party enters into it,” Gerwig added.
